In Europe, many of the top league clubs are owned by rich individuals and/or investors. However, the owners of K-League Classic clubs are different. Out of the 14 teams in the top division right now, 9 are owned by chaebols (conglomerates). The remaining five are run by the city or the province and as a result, these clubs receive significantly less funding than the chaebol owned clubs.
Here's the list of teams owned by Chaebols:
FC Seoul (GS Group)
Suwon Samsung Bluewings (Samsung Electronics)
Busan I'Park (Hyundai Development Company)
Jeju United (SK Group)
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (Hyundai Motor Company)
Pohang Steelers (POSCO)
Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (Ilhwa Group)
Chunnam Dragons (POSCO)
Ulsan Hyundai FC (Hyundai Heavy Industries)
The remaining government owned teams:
Gyeongnam FC: Government of Gyeonsangnam-do
Incheon United: Government of Incheon
Gangwon FC: Government of Gangwon Province
Daegu FC: Government of Daegu
Daejeon Citizen: Government of Daejeon
The difference in financial backing is clearly visible in the league as no non-chaebol team has ever won the league title.
